2026 – Week 42

Will this week be the answer to life and everything? Time will tell, I suppose. But it is amusing to me that Can-Con 2026 begins in Week 42 this year. Was that intentional?

Can-Con began on Friday and I took in twelve panels over the course of the convention. Due to my anatomy test, I was late getting to Make Magic Live!, but I enjoyed what I did take in. The next panel was on revision strategies and recommended a book that I added to my to buy list. I hope it helps me fix my novel series.

Saturday’s list of panels was longer. I began the day with History vs Historical Fiction. A friend was on that one and though I don’t write historical fiction, history may come into my stories and having a decent idea of how faithful one should be is worthwhile to me. After that, I went to a panel on indie print and distribution.

After lunch, I went to a panel called Creating a Standout Character. It had some authors I know and look up to in the writerly sense. Well, I suppose in the literal sense as well because I’m short. Then I went to a panel called Gentle Writing Advice and Chuck Wendig was one of the panelists. He was a special guest this year. In the evening, I attended Speculation or Anticipation? followed by a panel on lesbian and sapphic stories. That one was relevant in life and in writing for me. I saw some friends before going home. I was too tired to party.

On Sunday, I also did some of my anatomy colouring homework when I wasn’t in the vendors room. The first panel I attended that day was The Static Protagonist, which was quite interesting and there was a lot of discussion on whether or not Katniss Everdeen fits as a static protagonist. I’m leaning towards not fully. Next, I went to The Limitations We Bring to Reinvention. We looked at regular objects and thought up different potential hidden magical uses. It was pretty fun to sit in on. After lunch, I went to a panel on reading your work like an expert. I finished this year’s convention at a panel on adaptation. That one had low attendance, but a lot of the out of town folks had left by then.

When I wasn’t catching up with friends, at a panel, or in the vendors room, I wrote. I’m working on a novella because that is more manageable during the intense school adventure.

I learned so much and it was a really good con. There were gluten free sous vide egg bites with high quality bacon in them. I thoroughly enjoyed those on Saturday and Sunday. I think the only thing I wish is that they structured the schedules a bit differently, so it would be easier to go have dinner somewhere nearby and not miss any panels. Perhaps a shorter break between panels and every second panel has a longer one corresponding to meal times.

There won’t be a post for Week 43. School was absolutely too much. You can read about that here.

I booked a date with my friend to deal with my countertop situation, so I will have that remedied soon. I’m looking forward to getting this done on reading week. Some drawers are not installed correctly, so that needs to be fixed too.

My apologies on taking so long to get this one out. It has been a very hectic time.

Catch you on the flip side,

Rae
