2026 – Week 38

Despite my sore calf still plaguing me, I was able to get a major change to happen at home. I got two Kallax units moved on top of each other in my bedroom. The black one had been taking up space in between my living room and the balcony making a faux narrow hallway that I really wasn’t enjoying.

At the start of the week, I went to the hardware store to get bracing for them. I wanted that before I put any items back into them. I swear I should stop asking for help from young males there. I always end up having to figure it out myself anyway because they think too rigidly. What I mean by that is that if they don’t have the exact thing, they tell you to go elsewhere. In this case, I found a strip of metal with holes in it that I could cut into braces with my small cut off saw. When I ask a woman working there for help, I get 5-6 possible solutions. We’re learning about solution-oriented thinking in my program rather than problem-oriented. I suspect some members of the human population are more naturally inclined towards one or the other, though that may be based on my limited field experience in hardware stores.

I love it when a plan comes together! I stole that from my dad, but I think he stole it from Hannibal on The A-Team.

The weekend seminar was excellent. I came back to Ottawa with much to contemplate. We study the sword as an instrument for self improvement. They really clarified some kata with excellent demonstrations and I hope I retain it all. The senior students came and helped the juniors. A number of my friends are now senior students and I’m still where we all once were together. Feels a bit odd and a bit lonely, but that’s a result of taking time off to pursue other things. It was wonderful to see them all again and swing our swords.

I won a cute little bookmark at the raffle:

OK, time to catch up on all the homework I didn’t do this weekend. For an update on how the second week of school went, click here.

Catch you on the flip side,

Rae
